New Director of San Mateo County Planning and Building Appointed

Press Release from the office of David Boesch, San Mateo County Manager:

 – San Mateo County Manager David Boesch has appointed Jim Eggemeyer as director of the Planning and Building Department.

Eggemeyer will lead a department that plans and regulates land use in the unincorporated areas of San Mateo County. These areas include much of the Coastside and all other areas not within city limits.

“Jim has extensive experience working with the community in the unique planning challenges in the unincorporated areas,” Boesch said. “He also has exceptional technical expertise in local, state and federal planning guidelines and regulations. He is well qualified to lead such an important department.”

Eggemeyer succeeds Lisa Grote, who left San Mateo County employment to take a position with the City of San Mateo.

The Planning and Building Department is organized into three sections: Long Range Planning, Current Planning and Building Permits and Inspections. The department has 52 positions with an annual budget of approximately $11 million.

In the coming year Eggemeyer will focus on updating the County’s General Plan – the blueprint for the future – and other ordinances in collaboration with stakeholders to enhance the community, promote public health and protect natural resources.

Eggemeyer joined San Mateo County in 1993 as a planner. He then served in various planning roles before becoming a deputy planning director in 2005. He was appointed interim planning director in February 2010.

Eggemeyer earned a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from California Polytechnic State UniversitySan Luis Obispo, and worked as a landscape architect and planner before joining San Mateo County.
